The Home Office recommends banning 54 Chinese mobile apps, including the popular game Garena Free Fire. Interestingly, Garena Free Fire is based in Singapore and the developers are not Chinese. This game was one of the most downloaded games in India last year and occupied the space created by PUBG Mobile after being banned in September 2020. This app has already been removed from the Google Play Store and App Store in India.
Garena Free Fire Ban In India
In 2020, the government also banned TikTok and other popular short video apps in China. According to PTI, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) will officially issue a notice banning the operation of such apps in India.
When TikTok was banned on June 29, 2020, the list contained a total of about 59 apps. Other popular apps on the list were Shareit, Shein (fashion websites and apps), Xiaomi Mi Community, Clash of Kings, Weibo, Like, and more.

The request has been blocked by MeitY under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. It states that the government “has the authority to give instructions to intercept, monitor, or decrypt information through computer resources.” It is usually when the government is convinced that it is necessary or appropriate to act for “India’s sovereignty or integrity, India’s defense, national security, foreign friendship or public order. Prevents incitement from committing or investigating recognizable crimes related to the above.”
In the case of TikTok and PUBG, the government “considers the new nature of the threat”, “because it engages in activities that undermine India’s sovereignty and integrity, India’s defense, and the security of the state and its people. The third list of banned apps was released in November 2020 and contained a total of 43 apps. AliExpress was the largest name on this particular list.
